At our Club we have a song leader lead the kids in some fun worship songs each night he starts at 6pm and goes until about 6:15 then he will play a minute to win it game with them until Opening Ceremony begins at 6:25....the kids love it we pull 1 person for each club to the game and are keeping points all year and going to give the team with the most point some type of incentive at the end of the year...nto sure what yet but they will get something ;)
Hope that helps!

I need some new ideas for opening night in September.  We have over 200 kids in our club, so trying to do a hot dog feed or other food related night results in a huge "bite" out of our budget.  Suggestions?  I was thinking of a "Back to School" night, but am lacking creative juices.

Praying for all commanders as they prepare for the upcoming Awana year. Just because it is summer, your work/service is not done.

Rev. Coffman... Welcome to the community. You can get the image of the gospel wheel at https://awana.box.net/shared/static/ep0jhshk0d.jpg and then add that to a PPT slide.

Any Awana Commanders have the Awana Gospel Wheel put on a Powerpoint Slide?

It's tough...I was borderline in that "I am here" mode a couple years ago.  One thing I do is send out a weely email Thurs. morning (Awana meets Wed.) in which I'll review the previous night's club time, cover a couple rules/regulations of Awana and include a word of encouragement.  None of my Leaders ever reply, but the one or two times I've not sent it, it was mentioned the next time they saw me.  Also, I make an effort to exchange chit-chat/small talk with a couple different Leaders every week, let them know how much I appreciate their work and so forth.  I'm not sure how effective it is, but we've had 3 new Leaders volunteer since the Awana year started.

If I had the answer, I'd bottle it and retire a rich man. It is a heart matter for the individual. All you can do is to let people see your passion, encourage them and pray that they will catch the vision.

I have heard of clubs who hold contests and the handbook leaders participate which causes the children to apply some "encouragement" for them to be involved.

Some of the attitude might be in the way they were recruited. Did they join to fill a "need", or did they join because of a desire to serve children?

The old Awana training materials talked about the spiritual leader and the mechanical leader. Many are mechanical, just showing up and doing what is necessary. We want to move them to being a spiritual leader, caring for the children and their spiritual well being.

As a commander, our ministry is to the directors and leaders under you. So pray and model to try to have God move them to the next level.

What suggestions do you have for getting leaders vested in their handbook groups. I have several star performers and too many "I am here, what more do you want." I would love your ideas.
